Lesson 5: The Primary Triad

The Sun

The Sun is the star, the source of gravity and the giver of life to our star system.  In Astrology, the Sun is to be treated as the canvas or the foundation that the chart is built upon.  It also be thought of as a broad brush stroke or a gesture that will give a general idea about a person’s temperment.  Look to house placement for further granulation.


The person in the birth chart (the native), The day (in electional astrology), The entity (such as the business or the marriage in electional astrology), Will, Life-force, Self-esteem, Confidence, Leadership, Heart & circulatory system, Essence of the person

SOFT ASPECTS

SUN CONJUNCT OR TRINE MOON: highly self-directed individual, a combination of self-will and emotion, will need to feel an emotional connection to projects, will have a more emotional nature, depending on the element this will display as either fiery, sensitive, grounded, or as a magnification and increased importance placed upon the symbolisms of the zodiac sign their sun/moon, look to the house to see the area of life where the native focuses ego energies

SUN CONJUNCT OR TRINE MERCURY: talkative, communicative nature, needs to speak and be heard, mentally alert and active, possible nervous system or anxiety issues

SUN SQUARE OR OPPOSITE PLUTO:  these natives bring out strong reactions in others, people will love or hate them, may be manipulative and controlling, may need to dominate, the circumstances where they need to dominate will be seen via house placement

The Moon

The Earth’s satellite and the Sun’s partner.  The Moon is ever changing her face in predictable patterns of reflected sunlight.  She represents the Native’s emotional nature and what they need to feel loved, nurtured and whole.

These natives are natural “softies”.

MOON SQUARE OR OPPOSITE VENUS: what native needs and what native wants are two different things, a classic schism for men, these are the men who have a hard time finding a woman who is both what they want and what they need, so they remain single, the mother vs the lover

MOON SQUARE OR OPPOSITE MARS: inner struggle between aggression and heart, may feel misunderstood and this will cause anger, passions may be more than other people can stomach, over the top with competition

MOON SQUARE OR OPPOSITE SATURN: blocked emotions, denial of emotional connection in relationships, seriousness, judgmental of others who are free with emotions, takes time to trust others enough to let them see their vulnerability

MOON SQUARE OR OPPOSITE JUPITER: when these natives feel an emotion, it can be overwhelming, if they have an air or fire moon this may lead to them cutting off their feelings completely, if in earth and water the effect is less problematic

MOON SQUARE OR OPPOSITE URANUS: unpredictable emotions, flakiness in relationships, in love one minute/gone the next minute, detachment, strong need for freedom to the point that it may feel selfish, lessened desire to sacrifice for others

MOON SQUARE OR OPPOSITE NEPTUNE: blind to their own emotions, martyr, self-sacrificing, victim mentality, may not realize when they are being too much, clingy, externally validated emotionally

MOON SQUARE OR OPPOSITE PLUTO: strong need to control environment, attraction to powerful people and situations, ability to manipulate, or may find self attracted to toxic manipulative situations.

The Ascendent

Representing the Eastern horizon at the time of birth, the Ascendent or Rising Sign shows how the native approaches “new births” in life, also represents the native’s physical body/DNA, persona, social mask worn in new situations, or challenges

Life, vitality and health. Stature, color, complexion, form and shape of body. Older sources note its influence upon the intellect, the way the mind works, and speech.
In general, the first house represents the focal point for the personality and manner of expression. As well as describing the physical appearance, the condition of this house and that of its planetary ruler indicates the level of personal vitality and strength.

ZODIAC SIGNS ON CUSP

ARIES: Take action, a spitfire, fighter, aggressive nature, competitive, masculine, self-centered or ego-centric but in a child-like way, approaches new situations full speed, spontaneous, The Fool card in tarot, stepping off the cliff while looking the other way, muscularity or masculine edge to the head & face

TAURUS: gives a Taurus like personality to the native. Attractive in form, may give a thickness to the physical body, slow to change, slow moving, lazy, pleasure seeking, art/music appreciation, good sense of beauty, sensory appreciation

GEMINI: Communicative, a thinker, multi-tasker, on the go, nervous or anxious energy, playful, trickster, goofiness

CANCER: gives a Cancer like personality to the native. Security conscious, moody, instinctive emotional–to understand how the emotions are expressed look to the moon and house placement, if moon is poorly aspected by Saturn, Native may have a hard time expressing emotion or dealing with other people’s emotions

LEO: gives a Leo like personality to the native. Outgoing, generous, warm, ego-driven, vain, charismatic, bold, confident, strong body, wide chest, hair is either big or has gold coloring to it

VIRGO: analytical, neatness, may approach new situations cautiously ie might be a germaphobe if Mercury is poorly aspected to Saturn, or circumspect/highly analytical with their words

LIBRA: charming, pleasant, may have a cloying sugary “fake” sweetness especially with Jupiter aspects to Venus, diplomatic, other-oriented, a beauty of form or personality

SCORPIO: gives a Scorpio like personality to the native. Intense, intimidating, intuitive, may experience many life/death situations in life, will have a strong dark, mysterious undercurrent, may seem secretive, magnetic, sexual, intensity to approaching new situations, will appreciate probing deeply, may be misread as more intense than they are if the rest of the chart is devoid of strong Scorp/Pluto/8th House characteristics

SAGITTARIUS: gives a Sagittarius like personality to the native. Optimistic, growth-oriented, playful, childlike naïveté, can “bounce back”, open, foot in mouth, silliness, optimistic–sometimes overly if Jupiter is squaring the Sun or Moon, can lack depth or try to escape emotionally deep situations

CAPRICORN: gives a Capricorn like personality to the native. Coolness/calculating, seriousness, gravitas, critical, discerning, analytical with an eye to the practical, solutions oriented, status quo follower, if it’s not broke why fix it, status oriented, rule maker or follower or enforcer, will approach a new situation from the position of “how was this done in the past?”

AQUARIUS: eccentric look or personality, quirky, an appreciation of the fringe, could be tattooed or dress in a highly individualistic way, unorthodox nature, tends to give a lean, longness to the body, also leans towards an androgynous look

PISCES: gives a Pisces like personality to the native. Compassionate, dreamy, imaginative, soft nature, not prone to be egotistical, self-sacrificing, loving, spiritually minded, overly trusting, can give a softness to the body, deep watery/soulful eyes, may look angelic or delicate
